Tell Yourself a Better Story — How to Rewrite the Beliefs Holding You Back

Gail Shapiro

Stories Shape Our Lives

“What story do you repeat to yourself most often? Maybe it’s ‘I’m too old to change,’ or ‘It’s too late for me.’

These stories feel true — but they’re not facts. They’re patterns, and the best part? You can tell yourself a better story starting today.”

We all live by stories – the inner dialogue that defines who we are, what’s possible and what we deserve.

Some stories are empowering: “I always find a way,” “I’m strong,” “It’s never too late.” Others are limiting: “I’ll never change”, “I’m invisible now”, “I don’t matter anymore.”

After 60, those inner stories matter more than ever. They shape how you feel, what you try, and the quality of your days. When you tell yourself a better story, you start to unlock confidence, joy and vitality again.

But many of these stories are limiting: “I’ll never change,” “I’m invisible now,” “I don’t matter anymore.”

In this post, you’ll learn:

  • Why stories hold so much power.
  • The most common limiting beliefs women 60+ carry.
  • How to rewrite those stories into empowering ones.
  • A quick win exercise you can do now (includes a free worksheet).

By the end, you’ll know how to start flipping your inner dialogue from heavy and limiting → to light, hopeful, and freeing.

Why Stories Hold So Much Power

Humans are storytelling creatures. From childhood, we use stories to make sense of of life. Over time, those stories become our “truths” — even if they’re not factual.

  • A child who’s told she’s “clumsy” might avoid trying new things as an adult.
  • A woman who failed one diet might say “I’ll never lose weight“.

The key? These stories aren’t reality — they’re interpretations. And interpretations can be rewritten.

How Stories Shape Your Life

Each story influences your emotions, actions and results.

  • Emotion: “I’m invisible now” creates sadness and disconnection.
  • Action: Feeling invisible causes withdraw.
  • Result: Life becomes smaller — not because it has to, but because the story said so.

Flip the story, and everything changes.

  • New Story: “I am visible and valuable at any age.”
  • Emotion: Pride, worthiness.
  • Action: You speak up, join groups, take chances.
  • Result: You feel more connected and alive.

💡 Key Point: The stories you tell yourself are powerful — but not permanent. You can tell yourself a better story starting today.

The Subconscious Connection

Changing your story isn’t always easy – most of your beliefs live in your subconscious mind.

These beliefs are formed from:

  • Early childhood messages.
  • Cultural conditioning.
  • Past experiences of rejection or failure.
  • Other people’s voices absorbed as your own.

Even if your logical mind says, “I know I’m capable,” your subconscious story whispers, “Don’t even try.”

That’s why:

  • Affirmations don’t “stick.”
  • New habits fade quickly.
  • Encouragement from others doesn’t always sink in.

👉 Good News: You Can Reprogram Your Subconscious

With the right tools — journaling, Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT), visualization, or consistent mindset practices — you can reprogram your mind and rewrite your inner story.

💡 Key Point: You are not stuck with your current narrative. Even after 60 — it’s never too late to tell yourself a better story.

Common Limiting Stories Women 60+ Tell Themselves

Here are a few of the most common stories women over 60 carry – and how to rewrite them.

“It’s too late for me.”
This belief creates regret and hopelessness.

Reality: Women reinvent their lives, careers and relationships well into their 70s and beyond.

“I’m invisible now.”
This story leads to withdrawal and isolation.

Reality: Visibility comes from confidence — and confidence can be built at any age.

“I don’t matter anymore.”
This one drains energy and joy.

Reality: You’ve gathered decades of wisdom and compassion. You matter more than ever.

“I’ll never feel confident in my body again.”
This fuels shame and avoidance.

Reality: Longevity means you could have 20-40 vibrant years ahead. Your best chapter may be the one you’re about to write.

“The best part of my life is over.”
This story drains hope. Reality: With longevity increasing, you may have 20–40 vibrant years ahead. The best chapter may be the one you’re about to write.

💡 Reflection: Which story do you secretly carry? And what might shift if you replaced it with a better one?

How to Tell Yourself a Better Story

Here’s a simple, practical process you can try today:

Step 1: Catch the Old Story

Notice the thought that repeats in your mind.

  • Example: “I’m too old to change.”

Step 2: Challenge It

Ask yourself:

  • Is this absolutely true?
  • Whose voice is this — mine, or someone else’s?
  • Can I think of even one example that proves the opposite?

💡 Example: Women over 60 start businesses, fall in love, and reinvent themselves at every age.

Step 3: Flip It

Rewrite the story into something empowering.

  • Example: “It’s never too late. My wisdom and courage are my greatest strengths.”

Step 4: Anchor It

Say it out loud. Write it on a sticky note. Put it where you’ll see it daily. Repetition rewires your brain – every time you tell yourself a better story you create a stronger belief.

👉 This is how you begin rewiring your brain — repetition, awareness, and action.

Quick Win Practice + Free Worksheet

Try this right now:

  • Write down one limiting belief.
  • Notice how it makes you feel.
  • Rewrite it into a positive, hopeful statement.
  • Say it out loud and breathe it in.

💡 Example: “I always fail.” → “Every setback teaches me how to succeed next time.”

When you tell yourself a better story, you change how you feel. And when you change how you feel, you change your life.
